Ankara Esenboğa Airport in Turkey has reached Level 4+ certification status in ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, placing it among the world’s top 70 airports in environmental performance.
Operator, TAV Airports. aims to achieve carbon neutrality across all airports it operates by 2030, and to reach net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.
“Ankara Esenboğa became Turkey’s first carbon-neutral airport in 2014. We are now proud to be the first in the country to attain Level 4+ certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme,” enthused TAV Airports’ CEO, Serkan Kaptan.
“As of today, four of our airports are carbon-neutral, and a total of 11 are enrolled in the programme. Through investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, we are steadily advancing toward our net zero goal.
“We will continue to work with all stakeholders to support the aviation industry’s efforts in combating climate change.”
ACI EUROPE’s director general, Olivier Jankovec, noted: “Reaching Level 4+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation is a major achievement, making it the top performer for carbon management in the country. This is the result of a strong and lasting commitment to climate action, which started back in 2010 when the airport first joined the programme.
“With on-going CO2 reductions, robust emissions targets aligned with global climate goals and a clear long term carbon management plan, this new milestone reflects both ambition and sustained efforts to decarbonise. A huge well done to the whole team as they continue their journey towards net zero by 2050.”
At Ankara Esenboğa Airport, TAV Airports says its emission reduction targets have been aligned with global climate goals, and a long-term carbon management plan has been developed.
Remaining emissions have been offset through internationally recognised projects. In addition, employees regularly receive training on environmental protection, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas reduction.
