New airport carbon accreditation milestone for Swedavia – Airport World


Swedavia, one of the world’s most environmentally aware airport operators, has announced that Visby, Åre Östersund and Kiruna airports in Sweden have achieved the top Level 5 status in ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Their achievements positions Swedavia as a world leader in the aviation sector, as seven out of its ten Swedish airports are now certified at the highest level.

“The fact that three new Swedavia airports have achieved the highest climate certification is clear evidence of our long-term, goal-oriented effort to drive the climate transition in the aviation industry,” stated the airport operators director of strategic initiatives and innovation, Fredrik Jaresved.

“With seven out of ten airports certified at ACA level 5, we have shown that it is possible to combine critical infrastructure with climate leadership.”

The long-term goal is for the Swedish aviation industry to be completely fossil-free for domestic flights by 2030 and for international flights by 2045, in line with the aviation industry’s joint roadmap within the framework of Fossil-Free Sweden.

Swedavia firmly believes that sustainable aviation fuel, electric aircraft and hydrogen-powered aircraft are vital elements in achieving the green transition in the aviation industry.

It notes that all of its airports became fossil-free in terms of their own operations in 2020, making the Group the first in the world to achieve this.

All ground operations at Swedavia airports carried out by other operators will also become fossil-free this year through the partnership plan that has been developed, which involves all operators at the airports signing an agreement with Swedavia stipulating a focus on phasing out fossil fuels from their operations.

Within the framework of Airport Carbon Accreditation, Swedavia’s ambition is for its remaining three airports – Stockholm Bromma, Luleå and Umeå to become Level 5 certified by 2026.
