A Mexican Navy aircraft on a medical transport mission crashed into Galveston Bay on Monday, resulting in the confirmed deaths of six individuals. The Beechcraft King Air 350i aircraft was en route to Galveston, Texas, carrying four naval crew members and four civilians, including a young burn patient. The crash occurred in thick fog, and communication with air traffic controllers was lost for approximately ten minutes before the plane went down near the Galveston Causeway.
Search and rescue operations were immediately launched, involving multiple agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office. Two survivors were pulled from the wreckage, while the bodies of the deceased were recovered over the following days. Among the victims was a 29-year-old Navy Lieutenant, whose family in Mexico expressed their distress and uncertainty while awaiting news.
The flight was operating in coordination with the Michou and Mau Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transporting children with severe burn injuries to specialized medical facilities, often in the United States. The foundation has a long history of facilitating such critical medical transfers, having helped over 2,000 patients to Shriners Children’s Texas in Galveston and other similar institutions. The foundation has offered its condolences to the families of those lost in the crash.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by American authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Preliminary assessments suggest the aircraft may have been flying too low during its approach to Scholes International Airport in Galveston. Recovery of the aircraft is expected to take at least a week. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described the incident as “very tragic” and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted and families would be supported.
