United Airlines announced a significant expansion of its Caribbean network, with the upcoming launch of new nonstop service between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. This new route, set to begin on October 31, 2026, will provide a much-needed direct link for travelers in the New York metropolitan area to the popular island destination. For decades, passengers traveling between these locations have faced lengthy layovers, making this direct service a welcome development for both residents and tourists.
The new service will operate weekly on Saturdays, utilizing a Boeing 737-700 aircraft with a capacity of 126 seats, including 12 in business class. Flights will depart Newark at 9:03 a.m., arriving in St. Croix at 1:20 p.m. The return flight will depart St. Croix at 2:25 p.m., landing back in Newark at 6:58 p.m. This schedule is designed to offer a convenient travel option for weekend getaways and longer stays, aligning with the typical travel patterns for Caribbean destinations.
This route marks a significant return for United Airlines to St. Croix, as the airline, through its predecessor Continental Airlines, last offered nonstop service between Newark and the island in October 1994. The absence of direct flights for over three decades has created a considerable gap in airlift, which this new service aims to fill. The timing of the launch is also strategic, as it follows the cessation of operations by Spirit Airlines, which previously held a portion of the Newark-St. Croix market, leaving an opportunity for United to capture this demand with a premium offering.
The reintroduction of this service is expected to have a positive impact on St. Croix's tourism and real estate sectors. Improved air accessibility, especially nonstop, is directly linked to increased visitor numbers and potential property buyers. The New York metropolitan area is a key source market for Caribbean real estate, and the removal of the connection time friction is anticipated to attract more Northeast-based buyers. Furthermore, the route provides access to United's extensive MileagePlus loyalty program, boasting 110 million members, and strengthens ties with the Virgin Islands diaspora concentrated in the Northeast.
United Airlines' expansion into St. Croix also enhances its overall Caribbean network from Newark, bringing the total number of destinations served from the New Jersey hub to 23, more than any other carrier in the region. This new route complements United's existing service to St. Thomas (STT), further solidifying its presence in the U.S. Virgin Islands and offering travelers greater flexibility for island-hopping itineraries. The airline views this as a strategic addition to its network, allowing it to test demand in a leisure-focused market while also feeding passengers into its broader Newark hub.
